Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Types of fish to choose Muskie in Southern Lakes

I was watching a Northern fishing show about muskies today and immediately became fascinated with the fish. Growing to outstanding sizes and crushing baits made me wish about catching one, unfortunately living here in Georgia makes it impossible.. Or so I thought.

After reading this article I read that Muskies are actually native or have been stocked in Northern Georgia lakes. I still don't completely believe this considering the fact that most of their favored fish they prey on cannot sustain the warmer weather. What are you takes? After reading up on muskies they seem to be a potential cure for over sized gizzard shad and bluegill.

They are not a cure for gizzard shad or stunted BG. There are several lakes around me that have over abundant gizzard shad, stunted BG and 20 poound musky.

Musky, especially larger ones need cooler water refuge. They survive in a local river where summer temp pushes in excess of 90 degrees but DO is at saturation. In very large lakes, like in north GA they'd probably do fine. However, in a smaller body of water they'd struggle.

Musky would do fine on "southern" forage, that wouldn't be a limiting factor.

Quick answer is they were in north GA mountain lakes that is big difference than other GA lakes. ALso illegal to stock in the state without a permit. We discussed permit for mountain development and told no way that would happen. We are working on project in IL started by Nate and they are growing gret in ponds.

Thank You for the responses guys I was shocked that a Muskie could potentially survive so far south. Obviously they would need special treatment versus a bluegill or bass.

I always though a Musky X Chain pickeral hybrid would work in the south.

I have heard of NPxCP, but never MsukyxCP, but I suspect it is possible.
