Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Hybrid Willow

Specifically, Salix Alba Matsudunna. I researched as best as I could but am not too confident with my ability so am seeking experienced info. As far as I can figure these things are only supposed to have the roots reach 20' from the tree. Another site says no more than 5-10' beyond drip line. Is it safe to assume that if I plant the trees 30' from the edge of the water at full pool on the dam side (3-1 slope in water, 4-1 on land side) of the pond and keep the side towards the pond trimmed back to only 3' from the trunk, will I be safe from wicking?

I've got hybrid willows and a big Weeping willow on the property. The Weeping Willow is pretty close to the the trout pond and was my mom's idea as she lives on the property with my dad when not in Florida. I don't really care for it as it drops a lot of branches and leaves.

I have seen it's pink roots in the pond and it's about 15 feet from the pond edge. Of course this is not the dike end of the pond, but I have not seen it take so much water that it drops the water level significantly when I am not doing flow through.

What's funny is my dad said it would not get very big. Ha Ha! It's as tall as my house now and we're talking a three level log home in the 30 foot range!

As far as the hybrids they grow very fast but they are so far from the ponds I can't tell you if they'd have an effect on your pond or not.

If you are talking about planting them on the dam, I wouldn't, no matter how far from the pond.

Those type of hybrids suppose to be 100' away from septic fields, so that can give you an idea how far their roots can reach.
