Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Types of fish to choose exciting times......

Ok here is what I have stocked so far in my pond the past year and a half. Most small fish forage species were stocked last spring after my fish kill,

fhm 50 lbs (I could walk across them now)
rosy dace 1200
johnny darters 12
bleeding shiners 250
spotfin shiners 28 (saw a good sized school last week)
rosy reds 10lbs this spring
300 grass shrimp this spring
200 gambusia this spring
15 oss (no sign of them)
50 les (Lots of yoy)
100 res/hbg/bg/who knows
100 res confirmed this time but still have not caught one
50 hsb 8-10"
24 12-14" female black crappie
4 8" yp
1 3lb lmb

I stocked the lrg crappie and big lmb to help clean up the 1-3" mystery hybrids and any other yoy sunfish that may come along. I realize that they are not going to be enough and that the crappie are only going to be able to consume them for a short time, but I thought it would help a little plus it has been pretty cool watching the lmb blow up on the little guys. I plan on starting to catch as many smb and stock as soon as the season opens up down here then follow up with with tjs this fall. I also plan on catching some more yp and transferring but I will also pick up some of those this fall from tj because there is only one lake down here that has them and they are quite rare. So with the exception of papershell crawfish (cannot locate any yet) is there anything else you would recommend or advise me to do?

Oh yeah 50 walleye are headed this way in the fall also...

Just be very careful with all the bucket stocking you're doing that you don't bring in any nasties, whether they be disease, parasites, plants or a male crappie... One mistake IDing male from female and you'll have a very viable crappie population. How did you ID the sexes?

I doubt you will see much predation on YOY sunfish from the crappies or bass. In all likelyhood, they will heavily feed on the more adbundant and easier to catch and prey on FHM. What species is the rosy dace and bleeding shiners? Could you link it to a scientific name? Common names are hard to know for sure what they are... I would be concerned the LMB, esecially one that size will be preying heavily on any newly stocked fish but perhaps the abundant FHM may keep it busy.

Caught crappie while they were spawning. The ones with the beer bellies and oozing orange went in the pond. The ones that were oozing white went into the frying pan. I have been keeping all the fish in a 5% salt solution for 24 hrs before release. The bleeding shiners and rosy daces are the ones I posted on here last spring that you helped me id. We have had a blast watching the bass tear up the small sunnies. throw out a few pellets at sunset and the fun begins.....

I have a pond that I tried to build 5 or 6 years ago and it hit major rock and failed to hold much water at all but it is about three feet deep and probably 70 ft by 30 ft in diameter. I threw some fhm in it this spring to hopefully prosper and multiply so I can seign them this fall and place them in the main pond. Do you think that this would be enough water to raise the pk shrimp in also? It is heavily shaded on the south west side so it will offer some protection from the summer sun. There are no other fish besides the fhm in here.

You PK Shrimp need some kind of vegetation present to help ensure their survival - does this shallow pond have rooted vegetation?

It does have some around the edges. Will they not do well on feed a;one?
