I've got some giant poplar logs that are about 12 feet long and 2 feet diameter. Will these rot pretty quickly in the water/not worth sinking (I've got a tractor to move them) compared to just using artificial habitat/plastic habitat.

I have floated such logs before to provide turtles with sunning spots. They will eventually sink on their own.

ANYTHING organic will decompose quicker than pvc. But, I don't think they will degrade as quick as you think. I think it's good to have a mixture (diversity) of cover in the BOW.

They will work. Put them in and tie them off to the bank or a post until they sink. They will last a long time if they stay under water. We have big logs that have been in the water 20 years with little change.

Tie them in place and let them waterlog and sink. No weights.

Poplar is quite soft and will rot faster than true hardwoods. Will make great cover, just not as long term as other types of wood.
