I have been gleaning such incredible information from your forum since we decided to build a very small backyard pond for recreation last fall. The pond a run-off and water table pond which we completed before the first snows here in NW Ohio. I am very happy to report it's held well and is slowly becoming less sterile. The first FH's were introduced about two weeks ago and cannot wait to start the next projects. Many questions soon I am sure.

Welcome Waterbug. We welcome your questions. Being in NW Ohio, you are surrounded by a lot of great experts here on the forum. We've got a lot of members in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois. Actually, those of us in WV and PA have pretty similar weather and water conditions also.

Make sure your fatheads have a place to party so they will reproduce at a maximum rate. They spawn "upside down" so they are looking for things above them to do their work. I've found that 6x8 inch colored foam craft pads, available in craft stores for about 50 for $4.99 are excellent for this purpose. I've tied strings of them together, and tied a small sinker to one end, and the other end to the bank. They seem to work great.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. And, tell us a little more about what you've got, and about your plans for the pond.

So, how small is your "small backyard pond?"

Thanks for the warm welcome Ken. I am a rookie but thanks again to the knowledge I have gained from watching this forum I hand learned that and established several areas of floating or partially submerged areas of cover for the FH's to find their happy place upside down. The pond is mostly for a summer dip but plan to handle like many very small ponds, 10th. acre +/-, 11' deep by stocking only FH's and maybe yellow perch just to keep the pond balanced best I can in life's great circle.

Much to learn. A giant sponge I am.

If you look at some recent posts by our good friend Cecil Baird, you'll see some of the absolute monsters he raises in his 1/10 acre ponds, not too far west of you in NE Indiana. We have a number of yellow perch / small pond experts here, including Cecil and Bill Cody, who is in Malinta, OH. They can provide you with a lot of good info.

Not too far indeed and for sure I if they are willing to share I am more than willing to learn. Wife and I are adding aeration next week and a stream water fall feature drawing form the deep end and exhausting into the shallow end will be the next project soon. No perch planned until late fall early spring.

I am curious. From all I have read it seems the Eco 7 is a good choice for two/three diffuser express disks for my needs but I have not read where best to buy the Eco 7 pump from. Maybe not the right place to ask so apologies but would anyone have a recommendation for a reliable rep company?

Here you go this is where I got my pump. Still working fine going on 3rd year now. This pump and system should work great for your size pond.

There is also alot of brands of aeration to choose from in the resource quide on the Pond Boss website and they support this great place.
