Finally fished the pond for the first time last night. Caught around 10 bluegills in the 5 to 7+" range. They went into the pond last year at 3 - 5 inches. They are really fat. Had me thinking about a fish fry, but the fryer is still at the townhouse.

The disappointing thing was I didn't catch any HSBs. Put 100 in the pond last fall and haven't seen them since. Was hoping that I would of caught at least one or two. I had noticed clouds of fatheads of different sizes in the pond and they come to the feeder every night. So maybe the HSBs are full?

I was fishing with a fly rod and stubby steve's, right before and after the feeder went off. Some may not call this fishing but I did want to get a sampling of what is in the pond.

The title of this subforum is "Show off your catch". So where's the pictures?! grin

Congratulations on catching your first fish from your pond. I take it you have LMB as well? Did you see or catch any of them? I'm sure your HSB are doing well. Just need to fish more!

Oh, I got you. From your original post, I read "bluegills" and thought straight BGs, not HBG. Obviously would need LMB if straight BGs are present. Looking forward to seeing the pics!

A cross between a BG and a GSF. Called a hybrid bluegill.

See this.

Don't worry about the HSB, they are doing just fine gorging themselves on fatheads - they may never get feed trained if like the first ones I grew out on FHMs .... thought had lost them for sure until my son told me he was catching them on spinner baits.

I'm strictly a fly fisherman but couldn't buy a strike on a pellet fly or Stubby Steve .... caught 15 in one day on a small spinner bait to transfer to main pond - never got those HSB pellet trained that were in my growout pond.

Thanks Stacy, I am heading to Arkansas to visit friends and fish trout on the white river next week. I plan on taking it with me and trying it there. If it is going to be as successful as I think I will be placing an order for more when I get back.

Thanks George, reinforces what I was thinking. I have had fatheads in the pond for a year and half before the HSB where introduced. There are many pallets in the pond so the fatheads had no problem reproducing in it. There are still clouds of small fatheads swimming along the shoreline so I should have fatheads for a long time to come. Sounds like I need to try a small crankbait or spinner to catch the HSBs. Will give that a try soon.

Nice! A lot of mine develop the split-tail also.

"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"

If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
PB answer: It depends.
