This may be a "dumb question" but here we go.
Would it be possible/practical to combine a concrete over flow spillway on a 5 acre lake and a boat launch? If one was going to build an over-flow spillway and build a boat launch that would be to launch small boats and the rare electo-fishing boat could this boat launch/spillway be combined into one entity? Anyone ever seen this done?

how much water is going over the spillway?? 10,000 gallons a minute probly not!! 300? ya sure?? can you give more details and some pictures??

I would personally avoid it. Leave the spillway so it can do its job if needed.

Zep, I see no reason why not...seems like a great use of resource and function to me...construct it oversize for a 500 year rain event that seems to happen every 4-5 years anymore and have at it!

Not yet....have a contract to buy the place, will know more later. Supposed to close in next 2-3 weeks. It may be kind of a lame brain idea... I was maybe "thinking out loud". It just seems like a spillway is a boat launch backwards... and I was just thinking maybe you could design something at an angle and have the concrete go both ways & make it a "two-fer" boat launch and spillway....but it may not be best. LoL @ Rex....

I've seen that done once and can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work as long as it was properly constructed. However, I have seen a lot of boats launched on plain dirt.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

If the dam is sloppy or softened from recent rains, it may preclude vehicle access to the spill/launchway. Also, the slope of the launch would make your front dam slope fairly minimal.
I like the outta-da-box thinking. All the con's could be overcome with some engineering, compensating, and cash.

It was heavily emphasized with me to leave my spillway alone despite how attractive it appears to do things with it. Care was taken to ensure it was a virgin bottom so as not to risk a washout. That means it was planted and left alone, although I would really like to plant it as a wildlife foodplot. With a 4' intake pipe, I can't imagine ever needing the spillway in thee first place but as an old wise mentor used to tell me..."son, it only takes one".

sounds like a great idea to me. The slope can be slightly different than the rest of the dam. The material you use - whether rip-rap or poured concrete - can be shaped to handle both capabilities.
17 ac. in East Texas. 1800 acre floodplain, Built in the drought of 2011. 17k CNBG 2012, 200 LMB 2013, 100BCP/WCP 2013, 50 CC 2013, 50 GC 2019, lots of FHM in '12, gar, grinnel and mudcats were included:)

I use mine all the time and it's dirt..

it's an interesting concept....
now that I own the property other projects
have jumped ahead of this idea...
but I think I may try it at some point.
