Pond Boss Forums POND CONSTRUCTION Building a dam Secondary pond question?

I currently have a 3/4 acre pond that's spring fed at a rate of 300 or so gallons a hour. Depth is 8 to 17 ft. The outflow pipe has a 8 inch vert, that drops about 6 ft then pitches to a outflow pond that's 50 ft " down stream" . My little lady wants her " own pond" . So I was thinking of digging like a 30 by 50 hole at outflow hole, then laying down 60 ft of 6inch pipe on dam side of new pond. After seeded and level off put a 90 elbow on it and have the second outflow elevation pipe about 2 feet lower than upper pond, so outflow of first pond would be dropping into mid-depth of lower pond....I did forget to mention I have a emergency spillway on 3/4 pond, it's a 30ft 16 inch culvert that's 6 inches higher than outflow pipe. I have never seen it get close to that elevation.......does anyone see any issues that may Arise with the secondary pond.I dont want purchase 8 inch , I have plenty of 6 inch free.. Iam I correct I'n thinking the 6 inch would have to keep up to everything? The upper and lower pond?

Does anyone think that there would be a problem with this setup?

Ok I am no expert here at all but that sounds like a good plan. If your water falls below said pipe though for a while will that second pond have any kind of run off to it? Or will it just have to dry up until it rains good again. Does your pond stay full for the most part all year? Sorry not much help on my part. Just thinking out loud.

Yes I have 300 gallons of outflow from big pond that would be entering small pond. That outflow is constant even I'n dead summer.so the 3/4 acre pond outflow would enter the say 50ft by 25 ft small pond . Then I plan on daming the small pond with a 6inch outflow. Then it just goes into creek bed.

Oh ok that sounds awesome to me. Maybe someone else will chime in and have some more input for ya, but I think you are on the right track!

Sorry, there would be very little runoff or slope going into small pond, besides what comes I'n on the outflow from the 3/4 pond. Worse case senerio would be that if 6 inch couldn't keep up it would just go over the bank of small pond I believe.

Iam a hour east of twin cities,I should have mentioned my 3/4 acre pond sits on side of large hill,5 acres slope to it and spring feeds it. All the banks are reversed so only creek/spring feed the pond.. I didn't want all the water/runoff from hills just silting I'n pond .... Then from 3/4 acre pond it all goes down hill.. Down hill for about a 1/2 mile.

yeah that sounds like a plan to me. if you have that much water you should be fine.

Thanks esshup,right now the outflow pond is 10' by 10' and about 5 ft deep. I have fhm I'n it for feeding and supplying upper pond.the water drops 6' down to 90 elbow from 3/4 pond , the water gets mixed up good and enters lower pond . The outflow never freezes over I'n winter since there's constant water moving through it.There's a few monster gills I'n it.
