This has to be the first time in years that I have been fishing from the bank in February. However, it works to take the edge off of "ice fishing fever". This is the first winter in my memory that I have not been on the hard water at all.
That said, yesterday, the "banks" were open. Floured, salted and peppered blue gill and yellow perch fillets cooked in bacon fat in a cast iron skillet over a hickory fire pondside.
If it can get any better than that, maybe I don't want to know how.
Anybody else doing any of this?

I had an order for two large bluegills (I raise fish to sell to taxidermists) and caught and released 20 large yellow perch off of my pier. The water wasn't completely open that day but it was nothing to break some skim ice off the edge of the pier. As is par for the course the yellow perch are more active in the cold water and the bluegills probably weren't able to get to the bait.
BTW those Stubby Steve pellets work great on the yellow perch and one will stay on the hook indefinitely!
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Oh yeah, I ended up with 32 decent Bluegill this weekend. They were quite active up in the shallows where the water was a little warmer.
"Forget pounds and ounces, I'm figuring displacement!"
If we accept that: MBG(+)FGSF(=)HBG(F1)
And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?
