The most recent collections made by biologists in the native range of the specisus indicates it looks almost exactly the same as the northern bluegill but just doesn't obtain nearly as large as size and generally has 10 anal rays as compared to the northern bluegill which normally has 11 anal rays. I have never fished in the range where specisus are native, so I don't have any photos to share.

It becomes very challenging to be certain of the purity of the subspecies caught in many major bodies of water today because of the stocking of different subspecies outside their native ranges.
