Pond Boss Forums INTRO New Forum Member Introduction Hoping For a Pond!

First, what a great forum. Second, I have tons of questions and hoping that this site can help at least get me started in the right direction.
Last year, I purchased my dream property little over three acres (mostly flat) with a year round creak that curves throughout the entire acreage. Also underground stream feeds into creek at base of my wooded area of property. I have always dreamed of a pond and now it seems I have perfect place for one. The pond would be purely for fishing and just general wildlife enjoyment.
My first question is very simply�cost. I am a school teacher/coach and of course school teachers are on the bottom end of the professional pay-scale. What am I looking at for a pond in the � up to � acre size?
Any help knowledge personal experience would be greatly appreciated.

I am a complete noob in this but generically I have seen about $10k per acre is a good starting point.

Where abouts in SW VA? I looked at a lot of property out near Galax and Bland....beautiful country down there.

Not sure cost in VA but I have a 1/2 acre pond in MS constructed last summer and it ran 8,000 depending on how much dirt you want them to move. Second I would recommend on getting soil test before even thinking about a pond!! I know first hand!!.

Welcome Lowsingle. You and NCMIKE should start comparing notes. He is looking at buying property a little north and west of you for a pond (or ponds).

I've looked at enough pond sites west of the I-81 corridor to know that there are no easy ways to estimate pond costs without actually walking the property a good dirt mover dude/dudette. There are so many variables, it could range anywhere from a few thousand dollars to over $20,000 depending on terrain, rocks, caverns, distance to move equipment, difficulty in getting equipment to the site, and distance to move dirt.

Lots of good information from people in your area Lowsingle. They offer an opinion from very close. The terrain is much different than the from MS or Oklahoma where I am at. We would be just guessing.

Pond Boss is popular among people from West Virginia.

I know this won't help much but I can tell you this. I have a 3/4 to 1 acre pond and I wish it was bigger! So if you can afford it I would try to go a little bigger. I would ot settle for 1/4 acre pond if you did not have to. No offense to anyone who has a 1/4 acre pond that is not my intention. It's just that I have had my pond for 3 years now and it's great, but I always think what if it was just a little bigger. I know you can only do what you can afford, but if it were me I would hold off and save my money and not go any smaller than 3/4.

Of course that's just my 2 cents and it is what it is.

Or, consider 3-4 .25 acre ponds. Micro ponds are a blast, easy to manage, easy to start over, and fun to experiment in.

Strongly agree. It's great to be able to start over. I've had to do it a time or two.

Mine is 4 acres and i wish i had 2 2 acres, but that's besides te point.. Check out the books in the pondboss store before you do anything make sure you know everything you can, it's alot easier to get it right the first time then have a leaky mudhole..
