Pond Boss Forums MANAGING AN EXISTING POND Feeding Wanting to buy local fatheads etc.

I am in East Texas area. Terrell or Rockwall. I have a Vandzant area pond that I would like to stock with fatheads. I was wondering if anyone knew of a knowledgeable dealer in the area?

I have blue cat that are 20lb pounds that I stocked in 86 - Not sure how many but have caught a few. I have crappie Bass and large Brim.

Probably 2+ acres at 15 ft deep wine colered spring fed pond.

If you search the archives under STOCKING NEW PONDS, you will find that most folks believe fathead minnows will just be an expensive snack for your bass and cats.

Call Tyler Fish Farms. Why do you want them? As George says, once your stocking is complete, they are mostly useless. Baby fatheads might feed small bluegill or very small bass but feeding small bass could be a waste of money. How is your forage base?

I think it is pretty good (forage base)but some of the bass look slightly under fed. I have been catching only up to 2 lb + bass with very few over 4lbs. I have even been throwing a few small bass on the bank but not many... Any other suggestions for crappie or Bass feeding...

I'd worry a lot about the 20 lb. blue cats. Those suckers are world class eating machines and fatheads and other small fish aren't going to impress them. Other fish might have a lot of trouble getting much bigger than the catfish's mout size.

ha! ha! yeah those blues can be aggressive but I do not have to many left I assume. I have only caught 6 in over a year. I have alot of small fish and plenty of brim. I have seen those blues running in pairs on top of the water in summer on seek and destroy missions. I guess they are like sharks were not beleived to be and that is double teamers!!! ;-)

Dunn's does deliver. A few years ago I went to their pick-up point to get five pounds of fathead minnows I had ordered from Dunn's. I then drove east seventy miles to my home and stopped at the nearby home of our Justice of the Peace who graciously accompanied me to my pond. We adjusted a scale to compensate for the weight of a collinder and poured the minnows into the collinder. Amazingly, while all the minnows survived that seventy mile trip, they weighed only three and one half pounds. Doing the math, those minnows had to lose 0.342857 ounce per mile. Evidently, if I had had to drive two hundred thirty three miles, I would have had only one third of an ounce of minnows left. The only conclusion I've been able to reach is that if I had driven west, those minnows would probably have gained weight. Had I lived north or south? Take a guess. I really haven't been able to figure out any of it.

I don't know about short-weighing their
fatheads, but I'd never buy anything from
Dunn's. Everything they sell is over priced.
They sell fatheads for $2 to $3 per lb higher
then most local handlers and hatcheries.
