From my experience the alum only works for so long. Not long after it does it's job clumping and changing eletrostatic charges of colloid clay particles so they will sink you'd probably have to make another application if your water got muddied again. That's why it's important to circumvent the causes of your turbidity before making the application.

If your alkalinity and PH is low alum can be risky in that is can drop your PH quickly. My water alkalinity and hardness is so high it has no effect.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
