connor C Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 102 weatherford, texas area	I read somewhere on the forum that the more alum you add the faster the water will settle after being "shook up". Does this mean that if your water gets muddied up AFTER you add more than the recommended amount of alum then your water will settle very well? Drought of 2012 -God gives you situations so that you can benefit from them.

Not long after it does it's job clumping and changing eletrostatic charges of colloid clay particles so they will sink you'd probably have to make another application if your water got muddied again. That's why it's important to circumvent the causes of your turbidity before making the application. If your alkalinity and PH is low alum can be risky in that is can drop your PH quickly. My water alkalinity and hardness is so high it has no effect. If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

Is alum the same as aluminum sulfate? James, The same as aluminum sulfate. I haven't added any for years as my ponds are well established with good sod around them now. Don't remember how much I added directly to the ponds but it was based on jar tests. Last edited by Cecil Baird1; 01/12/12 08:47 PM.
