Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations What do I stock to eliminate Green Sunfish?

A couple of our small ponds have nothing but Green Sunfish, draining or killing off is not an option,what would be the best fish to stock to eat these? I know that I cannot totally eliminate them.

Stock 100 6" or larger LMB per surface acre of water. Keep monitoring the LMBs body condition. When they stop getting fatter, start harvesting the LMB.

What are your goals for those ponds?

Yeah or 2 or 3, 30 inch Muskie will do it too!! He,he just kidding. Esshup is right here in Arkansas LMB would be the best thing. I would go bigger if you could though. Say 8 inch or larger. IMO a 6 inch bass is pretty small to eat much. Although bass do grow pretty fast. Either would work just a matter of how patient you want to be before it starts working.

A good seine job will do more short term than the LMB. Seine and take a bunch out then add fewer LMB.

I've got the same situation in a clients 1 ac pond. Pond was dug where there was a wet spot, and no fish were stocked for a year. Then FHM and GSH were stocked, with RES and YP following 6 months later, with the plan to stock SMB the following year. Next Fall, before SMB were stocked, some fishing was done and GSF were found; LOTS of GSF. I used a fyke net over a period of a couple of weeks to catch a lot, then stocked 100 HSB that were 10"-12", and 25 2# RBT. No feeding is done in the pond. We'll see next Spring how many GSF are left.
