Nate- what time of year are best for catching the hybrids? Would mid May be a good time for midwest pond fishing for them?

I had gone over a few reports , and one person did note he tried a 2 inch blue gill and they wouldn't bite it?, just an fyi for others that had mentioned it. Like I said, this does get decent fishing pressure and are used to only pellets in terms of relating to a food source.
