Hogs are wary creatures in our area and hard to hunt - they tear up a lot of stuff. Most sucessful hunted at night with dogs. Maybe some of you gun guys could use night vision equipment! They are taking over many parts of Texas - need to put a bounty on them - heliocopters being used in S. Texas to control them - no way!!

I have never been a "big" game hunter, preferring small game instead, but I must confess to harboring a secret desire to go after a hog. I doubt I ever will, seeing as how there aren't any around here, but the idea certainly appeals to me. I wouldn't kill it if I couldn't eat it, so I guess that would mean a smaller animal for me.
What caliber is needed to reliably put one down?
Hogs might be closer than you think. There are some pockets of them in Indiana where they escaped from hog farms, or high fenced operations. Not much is said about them, but if you search enough on the DNR website, you can find where those pockets are located. Private land, so asking permission is a must.
As for caliber, it all depends on where you hit 'em. My buddy used a .44 Mag pistol, and went thru 2 reloads before putting it down. In the excitement he put his trigger finger too far onto the trigger and was pulling the shots right. .223 with good bullets work, but I'd want something heavier if the hogs are bigger and you haven't done a LOT of practicing shooting. Last few times I've used my Savage Muzzleloader, .50 cal and I was shooting a 350g .458" Barnes "X" bullet or the .458" 300g Barnes "X" Bullet, both moving around 2400 fps. or a tad quicker. They never moved once they got hit.
I wouldn't hesitate to use my .243 with a Barnes TSX bullet.
Scott, my folks live 50 miles further South, and there are supposedly hogs down there, in limited numbers. Domestic escapees turned feral. The story I've got is that the DNR acknowledges their existence, but doesn't consider them an indigenous population. As such, there are no restrictions on harvest.

Dave, you're 110% correct. I was told that if I got a broadside shot, to wait a bit and look for the fold of skin or crease in the skin that runs vertical right in front of the shoulder. Hold about 1/3 down the hog's body on that crease and put the bullet there. It drops them in their tracks and that spot doesn't move around as much as their head. I'm a fan of not having to track a shot animal.
Here's my buddies hog and sidearm. I wasn't impressed with the performance of the factory loaded XTP bullet performance either.
Hello all, Well at the airport in SanAngelo, about to leave Texas for PA. It was a great trip and i will be sure to return soon. Oh by the way it was in the mid 50's back in pa the entire week and in the 20s and 30s in Sonora and rained and snowed every day but one. The locals said I can bring all the cold air when I visit long as I promise to bring the rain
Oh, it's already here. Hovering in upper 30s right now with rain coming down nonstop and snow mixed in. The rivers and creeks around here have all swollen overnight and we have flood warnings all over. Supposed to begin snowing later this afternoon with the possibility of a few inches overnight. Then, we drop consistently into the low 20s every night till Saturday when it's supposed to get down to around 15. We might actually start to see some ice if the water isn't too doggone muddy from all this rain. To our TX brothers, sorry we're hogging the rain!
Well one or two may be a reasonable investment for this time of year and would still allow you to retain your man card! A full winter weather getup? We may have to question some things!
