[quote=ewest]I would like to see the study that says catchability of pure Florida LMB is as good as Northern LMB. Can you provide a cite so I can compare it to the other studies ? I may have miunderstood your post if you are not saying there is such a study.(/quote)

I cannot provide any studies nor I'm I confident there are any. However, in speaking with both Bob Waldrup of Tyler Fish Farm and Allen Forshage , director of the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center which overseas the share a lunker program make a pretty convincing argument to the fact that there is little to no difference in catchability. Both of these men have about as much expereince with genetics as most any men in the country. Again, I have no idea who is right on this debate. However, I would lean more to a higher perecetnage of Floridas if my goal was trophy bass.

The Share a Lunker Program has sold fingerlings. If you have to ask the price you cannot afford it. The program is called Share A Lunker Gold and 3 or 4 people have purchased these fish. The fish are not offered every year. I have been provided the price and its not in my budget. I would prefer not to post the price. Like I say of you have to ask; you cannot afford it.

You might want to review these threads on the subject. No question in my mind there is a catchability problem with Fla LMB - to much science to indicate such.

Catchability - LMB and others.

The last link is to many threads on catchability. The other 2 deal with reduced catchability in LMB and Fla vs Northerns. Are you aware of Garry Garretts work ?

That is a lot of info. Any thoughts on which thread address's catchability rates between Native and Floridas; best?

I am working on seeing the the Lunker Gold program still exists and if they want it promoted.

Thanks guys for all the info. I do like the mix idea 50% f1 25% native and 25% florida. Greg for your answer - 5000 cn bg 2000 red ear and 8000 fat heads. Again thanks for the information.

Cajun for big bass growth we suggest you double those bg/res/fhm add threadfin shad in the spring some golden shiners and then only stock 50 lmb/acre not 100 as some suggest. Gret start however.

Just out of curiousity, it Cajun wanted to stock trout in the early winter as sprint forage, how many do you think it would take to make an appreciable difference?

It depends - lots of factors at work . Only place I know of that does that (stock RT for LMB forage) is Calif. Lots of people stock RT to grow out and catch over fall and winter.

As with any forage - predator based system amount of forage needed is dependent on numerous things such as number and size of predators, existing forage populations, size of forage items, etc. Any forage added is beneficial. The degree of benefit is dependent on the above mentioned items.

Hypothetical ???: Since LMB are warm water fish and trout are cold water fish, I wonder what percentage of trout are actually eaten by LMB when water is colder and LMB are less active and digesting foods slower i.e. below 50F?. I think most trout would be consumed when water is closer to 70-74F due to trout becomming stressed and slower swimmers? More trout IMO would be eaten when water temps are in the 55-65F range and bass are more active, even more trout would be eaten as temps increase? Anyone with experience with this? How adept are LMB at catching an active healthy trout?
Mentor Bob Lusk has written about using trout as forage but side stepped the specifics of predatory rate and timing of trout consumption by LMB. From my observations predators are mostly opportunists - selecting or chosing the more vulnerable items such as 'odd swimmers' or slow or weak individuals. Predators most often choose or thin the weakest from the herd - natures way. Healthiest and wisest and with some 'luck' survive to reproduce and recruit. For example ever see a LMB swimming among some favorable sized BG or forage fish and apparently ignoring them? Why?

Bill , as usual you are dead on with the comment. Look to Calif experience stocking small RT into LMB lakes. The temps stay at the 55-65 range for most of the winter so the RT do ok but the LMB absolutely hammer them. The short time it is colder the LMB metabolism goes way down and few RT are consumed much less chased down. When it starts to warm up the RT that are still small are eaten. When it warms up well and the RT and shad are forced into a small zone (temp and O2)they become easy forage for LMB. That is the main reason the LMB can get so big and fat.

See these about Calif LMB and LMB feeding , temps and metabolism .

We stock trout for forage. Stock in the fall they will do just fine in most ponds around here from Nov-June. We stock the size most desired for range of bass we are growing. In other words about half the length. So 8 inch trout stocked when avg bass length is 16 inches. I think given this 7 month timeframe very few trout survivie and when they get stressed in dying process then get eaten if they make it that long. That help Bill.

So When do bass most benefit from trout stocking is anyknown to me I just know they benefit.

It is one tool out there for growign big bass. Based on our location close to growers a good economic choice as well.

Deadwood it is a budget issue. You woudl nto stock them until the bass are bigger so fall after original bass stocking year. We woudl run a cost beenfit analysis for our client.

Thanks for the input guys. Seems like Trout make for spring and early summer feeding, and tilapia make for good fall feeding when they die off. Also seems like it might be beneficial to have an established population of non-burrowing crayfish that can turn any dead trout or tilapia that were too big for the bass to eat, into more bass forage.

I built a 2 1/2 acre lake near St. Francisville, Louisiana in April of 2011. American Sport Fish stocked the lake in October 2011 with 2,125 Bluegill, 375 Shell Crackers, 3,000 Threadfin Shad and 2,500 Fathead Minnows. All of the bait fish spawned and the lake is full of fish. Bluegills are 6" now with lots of 2" babies, and there are millions of baby Fathead minnows along the banks. Friday May 18th they shipped me 190 F-1 Tiger Bass and I introduced they to our Lake. Now we wait and I will keep ya'll posted.
