Stick with ag lime in bulk. I have not seen an adequate explanation of how liquid lime can be concentrated enough to do what it is said to do.

kingfish let us know the alkalinity level three months after applying the 150 tons. Im going to guess it goes from 10.8 to 22. If Im right you will have to apply in 18-24 months. lets hope it shots up above 30 ppm.

I have a company trying to get us to start using liquid lime. After much research it is concentrated for sure BUT the cost savings is not there versus bulk ag lime. Maybe on ponds less than 2 acres it is better solution.

Dumb question...when ya'all speak of ag lime, are you talking about pellet lime or dust from the quarry?

Ag lime is crushed limestone. Check with you Co-Op. Its whar farmers use on their fields. You can use pelleted lime it just costs more. Here is a pic of pelleted in a bag.

Ewest, have you or anyone else ever used pel lime?I've limed my ag fields in the past, that's my only experience with lime. I know pel lime gives up its qualities quicker than reg. lime i.e. the pel lime is useful the year you put it on, and reg lime may take a longer time to act. Was wondering if pel lime worked better or not for faster results in water?

Yes I have used pelleted lime. It is really no different from ag lime. See contents on the bag. It does not work faster or better than ag lime. If anything ag lime is faster and better and cost a lot less. Be sure you are not talking about hydrated lime. It has only limited use. It is very storng , does not last long and can cause problems.

If it was me, I would refigure my budget and apply at leat 175 tons of lime and get as close to 300 tons as money allowed. This would allow an appropriate fertilization program. I would add as much cover as possible and work hard on harvesting 2000 lbs. of bass. I would cut out the forage stocking for this year if the money is not there and use that money for water quality, habitat improvement, and bass harvest. The money spent on shad could be a total waste if a proper bloom can't be established.
