I am planning on building a small pond (+/- ½ acre). Having never constructed a pond, I have a couple of questions. First, is a heavy duty corrugated plastic pipe suitable for the horizontal (through the dam) drain pipe?
Second, the layout is not textbook. Naturally, the lowest point is near one end of where the dam will be, and to complicate matters, my neighbor’s driveway is just behind the dam. There is a pipe under his driveway at this point. I see three options: (1) put the drain at the end of the dam and extend the pipe into the existent pipe which goes under his driveway. (2) Put the drain in the middle of the dam and bend it to empty into the pipe that goes under the driveway. (3) Put the drain in the middle and, with his permission, place a new pipe under his driveway in the middle of the dam.

Any thoughts as to these issues? Thanks!

The problem with that type of pipe is that it's only available in 20' sections, and cannot be connected to another piece of pipe with a waterproof connection (that I know of). Even if you wanted to make a stand pipe, the 90° bend at the bottom wouldn't be waterproof and I'd be afraid of a leak.

Thanks for the tip...I wasn't sure about whether it would work. i guess, when in doubt, use the better material!

Any suggestions on the placement of the drain?

If it was my pond, I'd opt for the easiest, most cost effective placement of the drain. In a pond that small, I doubt that the placement in the pond is critical.

Why do you want a drain on such a small pond?

i wouldn't necessarily want to drain it, but would want to control the depth without water going over the dam (i know that you can't stop it in the event of excessive rain, but under normal circumstances, without a drain, i would imagine there would be times of overflow). is there a better way of controling the level???
