Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations Got some Tigers and Browns today :-)

I had some browns (37) and tigers (35) delivered today as well as a few rainbows to the pond today. Last year I stocked in a bunch of brookies and about 25 browns but thought I would try out more browns and after finding out the hatchery had Tigers and after hearing so much about them on here...I just had to try them! I may get some brookies yet for removal in the spring but am not sure at this time.

Here are the pics of some from today. The browns and tigers were 6-8" and the rainbows were 12". The ones pictured were on the smaller side of them all.





Can't wait till they get a little bigger!

Congrats Ryan, you'll find that the tigers will bite more often than the rainbows and browns, enjoy.

Thanks guys, I am excited to find out how aggresive they are! On a side note, I am going to stock 100 brookies strickly for take-out in the spring. Probably going to keep them caged in my big cage and feed them hard. The brookies seem to have a bit more fat on them and they are amazing done in the smooker!

Which of them are brown trouts? I can guess that the 2nd from top and the last one. But anyway their color is interesting (of course, there may be difference between European and American trouts).

All the brown trout in American are descendents of European brown trout.

What CJB2003 said is correct. They are all based off the eurpean or German browns as they are called by the hatcheries around my area of Canada. There are a few different strains though of browns and some are better in the warmer waters. This strain I am trying this year is the same that is stocked in our rivers in the area for sport fishing. My local river (The Grand) has a world class brown trout fishery and is just 5 minutes down the road from my place. Last years browns I got were a strain that is more commonly stocked in the Great Lakes where the water is fridged all year long.

Ryan are you feeding the trout and if so what brand of feed are you using?
Also did any of the previous stocked trout survive the summer ?

Being up in Ontario, I am unable to get the food used in the States. I feed my fish Martin's which is actually local for me (15 minutes away) so I can go right to the plant and buy saving me paying the middle man! They supply ALOT of food trout food to the big comercial operations growing rainbows up in Georgian Bay as well as the little guys like me! I have had nothing but good luck with there food

This year I had a bunch of last years browns die on me and all of the remaining brookies but I had my aerators shut down on me when I was on vacation in the hottest part of the summer (last week of July) and caused a D/O crash.

I was told by the supplier of these fish that I should stop feeding in my pond in late May/Early July and don't feed again until September. My pond is mainly ground source water (its on the top side ofi a peat bog) He said that he had a few customers loose trout from feeding in the summer, and once they quite feeding like that they would make it over the summer every time up here...even the brookies!

Next year I am also going to add 2 large floating rafts (10x10 or bigger) which will make for some great shade and give them a place to hide in the heat of the day other than just my current dock.

That's a good deal living that close to the fish food plant.

It might be good advice to cut back on feeding in warm weather, but I would monitor the pond temps. and maybe feed them early in the morning up until the pond temp. reaches 70 then stop until things cool off.
Every pond is different, I feed twice a day all summer but then I have 110 gpm piped in from the stream so that gives them lots of cool oxygenated water.

Keep us updated on your trout growth, I'd like to see more people stock tigers, then they would be hooked.
