Bream

So I caught this cooler of bream in my pond, ranging in size from 6" to 8.5" and what I believe to be up to 3 different species. I realize the picture isnt that great but can anyone tell the species of some of these? Or perhaps these are examples of male and female within the same species?

The one in the bottom left was nearly black/purple-ish throughout and a bit thicker than some of the others. The bottom right fish was greenish, gold and had bright yellowish orange under the belly. The fish in nearly the middle of the frame pointed down was mostly a silverish with light vertical stripes and a touch of yellow.

I have generally caught what I call redbreast, but have caught many of these larger mostly black/purple this summer than im used to catching... but I rarely bream fish and all of these were on crickets, which is even rarer for me. I caught these to keep, as well as probably 15-20 other bream in the 2" -5" range i put back.

Very tough to tell from this picture. Is there any way you could catch a few more and get better pics? If I had to guess just by this picture alone, I'd say all bluegill. That would be my first impression walking up on this cooler.

Catching more for pics is easy, my terrible cell phone camera is another issue all together. Your suggestion that they are BG is interesting to me, in that I know there is a difference between BG and bream such as redbreast; and didnt think i really I had any/or many BG as they are mostly associated with the lakes (Santee) around here and not ponds. However there is the distinct possibility that I dont know what the hell Im talking about smile I'll get back to ya.

Omaha, u ever make it to the college world series games? Im a S.Carolina alumni and still excited about our team in omaha the last 2 seasons.

Here are some color differences in BG - same pond - same time (all with in 30 min.)- same diet(?). Some of these fish changed colors in the few seconds from the water to the boat.

As often as possible! Did not catch any games at the new stadium this year though. You get over here to see any games? You Gamecocks can play! Two years in a row right?

Those darker ones with the red breast are most likely your larger more mature males. Those are the fish you probably don't wanna harvest for the table, depending on goals of course. The lighter colored females are the ones you'd want to mostly harvest for the table. They all look like BG to me. Some nice ones too...

Hey guys, any possibility of any CNBG in the mix? Just throwing it out there, the one in the lower left corner with the more pointed "face" is why I said that.

I won't say it isn't... But with the pic quality, I can't be sure. SC certainly is far enough south for them to thrive. I just caught a bunch of CNBG in southern NC while on vacation.

Havent made it to omaha, would have loved to have seen us win our 2nd in a row this year. Wish our football team would step up and make some noise this year.

They are all just bass forage in my opinion, rarely do I fish for them. If bass are the focus, is the removal of the large males still an issue? Honestly in a year, I remove less than 50 large bream (6" +) from the 10.5 acres of water and remove between 25- 50, 2"-4" to use as bait, so Im not sure im removing enough to matter. If Im ever successful with eradicating the majority of the crappie, I will start to manage bg numbers again. Pond has always been loaded with bream and is still the main forage but I supplement with tilapia each spring.

Removing that many BG from that BOW isn't even a drop in a bathtub, let alone a bucket.

Yeah, that is a large BOW and can handle plenty more fishing pressure than most so that few a number of BG isn't an issue.

You call them breams? Heh, the same name here in Europe means a different fish (like this):

Wow, that looks more like some kind of shad.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

Dave, did you talk to me?
Breams (like one in pic) are common fish here in Europe and grow quite large. Somehow I can't imagine large American bream. Let me guess - they are similar sized like blue gills or sunfish?

Bream is what the Southerners call Bluegills. Just like Texans call them "perch".

Southern Missourians call bluegills or any other small member of the sunfish family perch or bream.....Most have never seen a real perch.

Yes Grundulis, I was speaking to you. That bream resembles our gizzard shad.
