was looking at a property in Central Wisconsin that has an acre pond about 12-15 feet deep. Owner claims all his fish were eaten by an Otter. I am getting this information through the real estate agent.
Can one Otter empty out, eat, all the fish in a pond this size ?
If they can is there a way of controlling this type of damage.?

They won't clean out ALL the fish, but in a 1 acre pond, they can and will kill virtually all fish for a little eating and fun.

so what can be done. I guess they would need to be trapped or whatever.
maybe i should just walk away from the deal, its just very difficult to find deeper ponds for sale in Central Wisconsin at an affordable price

I have had my pond for nearly six months now. In that time i have recognized a certain amount of tools that a pond owner can not be without...
#1 pond boss
#2 Wallet (must be loaded at all times) & (keep away from wife)
#3 Shot gun (must be loaded at all times) & (keep away from wife)
#4Traps (keep away from wife)
#5 elbow grease

I may have left out a few but I believe that the tools stated above and determination you can conquer any pond problem..Just remember..when it comes to game wardens and wives what they don't know wont hurt them, but if they find out it may hurt you......

yoli you can put an electric fence around it, works great, get at least a 10 mile charger so you have plenty of zap to cut down on weeds, they're about $70 bucks at Tractor Supply, then with aluminum wire, plastic conduit and zip ties you can do it for less than $200.

yes I have owned pond properties and agree. My wife has fought me all the way but remains my living (loving) wife

Now that's a good idea, wonder why the guy that now owns it did not do that. He is supposedly a "tournament" fisherman that had some really nice fish in the pond.
Not sure I get the connection between the 10 mile charger and the weeds

The stronger charger sends enough current thru the less than 10 miles of wire that it burns thru any weeds that grow up and touch the wire. A weaker charger will just use the weed as a ground, and that will render the fence useless until it's cleared off.

Otters will run singely, or a family will run together. They don't have to stay by water, I've seen tracks of a threesome going thru the woods, where ponds are a couple of miles apart (in N. Wi.). They were pretty easy to follow thru the 12: of snow. They'd bound thru the woods, but slide down the hills.
