Pond Boss Forums MANAGING AN EXISTING POND Fertilization Rains wipe out my bloom

We had some heavy rains over a month ago, and my bloom went away and my water clarity went from about 14 inches to a about 2.5 feet. I've got a bucket of the PondBoss recommended Southern Excellence fertilizer floating in my little 1.5 acre pond, but not much of anything has happened over the past few weeks in regards to a bloom. I've thought about using some more prosol water soluble, to boost it along, as thats what I used initially to develop my bloom this year. However, there is some kind of new red particles that are developing on the surface, looks like the green bloom when it started only its red. Shan mentioned in another post that this is some form of microscopic algae. I had it last year before I renovated the pond, and it usually is only there in the early morning to noon time, then its mixed all up by the wind I imagine. There is also every couple of days a slight hint that the normal bloom is attempting a come back, but nothing has developed like it did earlier in the year. There is also the beginning of some foam type looking material developing on the surface and accumulating along the shoreline, it gets looking quite thick and is a mixure of yellow and brown.

So any ideas on what I'm seeing and any suggestions on what to try from this point on?

14 inches before the rains indicates possible over fertilization. This would cause the "red color". That is a type of bluegreen algae(nice name for something red) that is known as Red EUglena. It will come and go with nutrient loads and is quite common when fertilizing a pond for maximum fish production.

I too thought it was probably over fertilization but I followed all the recommended directions for the 1st 3 applications 2 weeks apart and actually used less than the recommended amounts of the prosol water soluble fertilizer. And the bloom didn't show until 1 week after the 3rd application, about as expected.

Anyways. I've not added anymore prosol, but still only have my floating bucket, and my water clarity has remained at approximately 2 to 3 feet. The little red particles I mentioned before have not been seen since the post. I do feed but 2 to 3 times a day, but not much at this point only about 1.5 lbs per day total. So I'm not sure if I should add any new prosol to attempt to kick off a bloom again and if so, how much to actually use now for the 1.5 acre pond.

As Shan stated in the post below this one, lots of factors so the product recommendations are very general. If you overfertilized last time, do only the half the amount of prosol this time. I do not fertilize by a schedule rather when clarity dicates its time to fertilize. This spring that was every two weeks because of rain. Lately for some ponds it has been good staying 18-24 incehs for over a month.
