Maybe it was the heat or the lower water levels, but my pond just zipped by the moss phase this year. Any ideas?

Sniper, let's get this one bumped up and see if we can find someone with some answers. I'm sure temperatures can certainly effect whether you have too much or no algae at all, but I'm sure one of the experts here have seen this first hand as well.

Maybe there are enough plants in or around the pond to utilize all the nutrients, leaving nothing for the FA to grow on?

Water clarity may be different (less), thus less light penetration results in less FA. Fewer nutrients due to various reasons will result in less FA. More submerged plants can result in more competition to FA. When water has visibility greater than 16"-2 ft, FA normally only exists when there are excess nutrients not being utilized by other forms of plant life.
