Of course I am out of town when my wife calls to tell me my 8-year old has caught the biggest GSF of 2011.  It sure looks healthy to me. Our CC are getting huge.

Is that a true greenie or another kind of hybrid? The mouth seems too small.

A good question. I would guess it is a GSF or a very high % at least.

A good question. I would guess it is a GSF or a very high % at least. It is a fair question, but no doubt to be GSF. My wife has been schooled on all the features and this one exhibited a "mouth that could swallow a golfball" unlike it's other sunfish cousins.

Congratulations! Did they get the weight of the fish by any chance? JHAP, I'm just fortunate my wife used a RULER this time. She also took a picture of this fish next to a bottle of OrangeGlow handwashing soap for scale purposes. Getting her to weigh them by habit is another lesson for another day...

That sunfish almost looks like a hybrid to me, perhaps a f2 fish. Either way, a very healthy looking one!

The debate is on. The angle of the photo is not the best. I'm also thinking there could be some hybrid in that fish. GSF are typically not that high bodied. The mouth is sort of large but to me does not appear as large as that in a normal GSF. Again the angle of the photo is deceptive.

Boy that angle makes it tough. Until I see a better pic, I'm going with my first, rapid-fire impression..... I think there's something else besides pure GSF in the mix.

And we surmise that: BG(>)HBG(F1) while GSF(<)HBG(F1)
Would it hold true that: HBG(F1)(+)AM500(x)q.d.(=)1.5lbGRWT?

I rarely see a longer operculum flap on a GSF. This fish has a fairly lengthy one, like a larger male BG might, indicating BG genetics. It is also rounder, as has been pointed out again indicating some BG genetics. I do agree that mouth appears a bit smaller than normal for a pure GSF. A pure GSF of that size would have a substantial gape, that fish doesn't seem to. A more in between mouth size, again leaning towards BG genetics. The last thing that gives me the impression of hybrid is the bluish bottom of the operculum. The coloration that gives BG their common name. In GSF, that area of the operculum is generally white(female) or yellow/orange(male), not blueish as in this fish. GSF have very wide ranging coloration though among different populations and even different fish. However, put those four together, the longer operculum flap, the rounder shape, the mouth which seems too small and the wrong coloration and I am saying hybrid.
However, the fact of the matter is without looking at the gill rakers and even genetic testing we'll never know who is right. It really doesn't matter though, as it's one fine fish either way.

my take on that pic....the fish is >90% gsf but there are hints of other genetics present (all called out above).
GSF are people too!

Another factor is the light fin edges typical of HBG. I still think its a high % GSF.
