Pond Boss Forums STOCKING A NEW POND Types of fish to choose Gar

If anyone is ever interested in Gar. We just stocked a pond with 75 mixed shortnose and longnose gar. I do not see a big demand for such but Hey you never know so thought I would let you know. They are 16-22 inches. I have them sold if I can grow to 24 inches. Anyone know the best way to growout Gar?

I've raised them in aquariums and they are one of those species that is 100% live feed. I like the outside the box thinking... I hope this one works out better than the LCS did!

Gar are so cool. I have two shortnose in my aquarium and like CJ noted, they only go for the live stuff. And when they do it's pretty cool to see. You can easily deduce why they can be difficult to get a hook set.

The only thing I can think of is chickens.

i saw a show where a guy was fishing for gar using what basicaly looked like "nest" of fiber.. no hook.. the gar's teeth get tangled up in the fibers

Bear Grylls I believe. Are you sure it was a gar though? I thought it was another toothy fish.

Bear Grylls used the twine/fiber lure to catch an overgrown eel species in New Zealand I believe.

The same method is used for gar as well. I don't recall Jeremy Wade of River Monsters using the twine method, but I really don't remember every single episode. When he was fishing for alligator gars, he was using live over sized goldfish for bait.

Yes I hooked one about 20 years ago as we tied on a some ripped up ski rope. It worked to get a hookup. Casting in front of him and wham but he came loose after about a 5 min battle. I think he probably died later with the ski rope still attached.

I always heard that if you fray a piece of rope around a hook that's how you snag them.

you can take nylon rope and fray it out to catch them i have done it but a little bg works much better. gar have pretty poor eye sight so if you can see them throw a little bg right in front of them or any little baitfish they will eat it.i also catch alot of gars at night with cut bait i supend it on a cork to try and keep catfish away from it but gar have excellent noses they will track it down.

i would just over stock your pond with bream minnows and shinners the gar will grow

let us know how they do!! I here cut bait works for them, but that might not work in a pond as food.

where did you get them??

We shocked them from a pond in south GA and now in weed infested pond near us in north GA. We have been busy but hope to test out if they eat dead fish here pretty soon. If I can get them to put on some inches I can sell them. Thanks
