Without seeing the head I can't be sure, but the body and coloration look like a brown water snake (non-venomous).

I'd kind of guess watersnake also, but where are you from? If you say somewhere far north, then we rule out Water Moc.

I live here in Arkansas and we have Water Moc.'s everywhere. That I don't believe is a Water Moc. Looks more like a big copperhead to me. Or some sore of other water snake. Not for sure though. Water Moc's from what I have seen are a lot more black in nature and don't have a lot of pattern to them.
The only difference between a rut and a Grave is the depth. So get up get out of that rut and get moving!! Time to work!!

I would say it was a Northern Water Snake.

Hey Eric, You have Water Moc's that look like that?? Wow! I have never seen one with that kind of color. Funny how you can be just a state away and have very different things going on. Not to say they are not here in Arkansas though, I just have not ever saw one with that type of pattern. And I don't go out looking for them either!! What ever it is, it's very scary and rather big and i would NOT want it in my pond!!

The color and pattern look close to the Diamondback water snake which is non venomous.

Whatever kind of snake it was/is, you missed a perfect opportunity to grab it by it's tail when it's head was underwater.
Todd will come and get it for you, so no worries there.

That looks a lot like a common water snake to me. I see those in my pond fairly often. The won't bother you if you don't bother them.

We have water snakes (non-venomous) that look just like that one. Heck, some of them are so friendly that they come up when we throw out fish feed....

Brown water snake is my vote. not poisonous but very aggressive and will bite. I would not pick it up

It favors the banded water snakes I have in my pond. That being said, there are numerous variations. Cotton Mouths in my area tend to be darker (closer to black) with different markings that are more "splotchy" bands with less definition.
