I don't want to hijack Cody's thread, so I'll post a quick question here. Are there threads that discuss the various kinds of fish traps, their pro's and con's? Homemade or store bought? Is there a particular type favored by most folks?
I read Squeaky's posts' on his homemade fish trap, (GSF and snakes), it seems to work well. I was just wondering if there are any more?
Sorry to have to ask, I don't seem to be having very much luck with the search function. I'm sure it's due to operator error.

Here in Latvia we use such kind of fishing traps (the best pic I could find):  Use your imagination and make a mirror copy of it to the left too. So, how it works: fish reaches that fence(in the left side of picture) and it has to choose a direction - to the left or right since it's impossible to move forward. Anyway it gets into a trap through a funnel type entrance. It's really easy to get in but it's very hard to get out. Usually 2 (or even 3) funnels are used to reduce chance of fish getting out. The tail is tied up. When you want to get your fish, simply untie it and collect live fish.

Here's a photo of one of my home made traps, I used 1/4 inch plastic fencing, just make the cylinder, then shape a funnel and an end and zip tie it together, I used a wood hoop from a craft store to keep the shape at the door end, also put a piece of metal stock on the bottom to weigh it down, I used aluminum. The best bait for the trap I have found is beef liver. I use the traps to check on the size of the trout, but also get mostly GSH and some pumpkinseeds.

I'd avoid plastic material because fish always rubs against it and it may get injuries. Cloth net is better because of this reason (I've seen some tench that have been in trap for ~1 week. I can't even imagine how could they look like after one week in plastic trap...). By the way, stiff plastic funnel is easy to get in and not hard to get out too, but loose funnel is easy to get in but hard to get out.

If your planning on leaving traps in for a week then by all means use cloth netting, my traps are never in longer than overnight and are simple to make, cheap and in my experience very effective in small ponds and streams.

MRHELLOMake it by yourself! You even don't need much materials - that cloth (or plastic fence material) and some metal wire. Of course, some common tools and a some skills would be necessary too
