Pond Boss Forums INTRO Questions & Observations 1 to 10 pounds

We have a 7 acre pond that we've fishing and caught a couple 10+ pound bass and then a ton of 1 to 2 pound bass. I'm wondering why we dont have any 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 pounders. Are we low on the food source? Do we have too many 1 pounders in the pond and need to do a little management on them?

Without a serious fisheries survey, it is only speculation but what I often see is the originally stocked fish do quite well, giving you those 10+ pound bass. Then after that the bass do too well spawning, you get too many bass and all subsequent generations are over populated and stunted and you end up with piles of 1-2 pound fish with that occasional rare trophy...

Thin out those little guys and work on bringing back mid size range forage.

I agree with CJ. Correct harvest mgt is the single most important and least well done pond mgt function.

Yes CJ well stated. Have you been looking over our shoulders on the shockboat or something?

Would it help sooner if I got some larger bluegill put in the pond? Stock some tilapia? Then I can start to remove the smaller bass? What's the best thing I can do?

Are you feeding the fish ? Have you had the pond electrofished ? You need to be sure of the situation first. See these from the archives.
