I am biting the bullet, for better or for worse, and drilling a well. The drought has me to the mat. I hope to at least zero out more evaporation and seepage.

Anyway, esshup has been a big help with questions and I thank him for that. I want to throw another question out to him and the masses.

I want to mimimize the well pit/house/tank/etc. profile. The well will be near the lake and dock for power. Any suggestions as to mimimizing the silhouette would be appreciated. The drill boss said they can put the pressure tank somwhere away from the well, but that sounds problematic.

Thoughts?

My pressure tank is roughly 30 to 40 feet from where the well is drilled. For sprinkling or filling the pond you want the well to run non-stop - no pressure tank. The constant on/off of the pump will shorten it's life if enough pressure is allowed to build up to shut the well off.

Put it underground... I know phone company's have pits underground made from some kind of poly that you can actually climb in and work in..

If you do put it underground, make a provision for a sump pump, or a drain hole in case something springs a leak. If you do put it underground, also have something that will shut off the power if the water reaches the pressure switch. Electricity and being underwater with an open connection don't mix.

Esshup is correct. You do not want a pressure tank. Let it run and shut it off with the breaker. No water valve.
Talking submersible here, mine has been running 24/7 for almost a month now.

So if I just use it for the pond and lawn irrigation, I don't need a tank. Is that correct? This is all new stuff for me. Don't roll your eyes.

For just the pond and lawn you do not want a pressure tank I guess unless you can adjust it to not keep shuting the pump off and on.
You just have to remember to not install a shut off on the water so you do not block the water on a pump that is not shut off.
I just use the big breaker switch on the little box next to the well head.

My well has valves set up so that I can run it to the pond without the pressure tank or run it to the house through the tank. This has worked well for us. I wired in a swimming pool timer so that I can adjust the well to keep the pond at the desired level throughout the year. I bumped it up another hour per day this weekend because of the ongoing drought and increase in evaporation from the heat.

That does sound like the way to go for the well.
Was it pretty easy to rig the swimming pool timer?

The timer is a good idea. I think I'll put one on the aerator as well.

There is a float that is available (like a float in your toilet tank) that monitors the water level in your pond. It opens to let water into your pond from the well, and shuts itself off once the desired level is reached. I've seen them in the Stoney Creek Catalog.

Cool. Now I just need to find a person who can do all this stuff and actually have it work. That is the real challenge.

I have submersible pump in 4" well that will put 2 foot of water in a .5 acre pond in 48 hrs. 1 hp submersible pump with no pressure tank. Casing is cut a foot out of the ground barely noticeable. I painted the pipe green and buried the pipe to pond. Works great.!

But it's so durn hot down there this time of year........

Dave, I'm ready to adopt, the daily chores around here might be a deal breaker tho, especially the wood splitting and snow removal in the winter. But, there is more water here than there, the fishing is pretty good, and the deer are bigger than there too. When do you want me to set up the 3rd bedroom for ya?

All righty, then. Got the well drilled and pump installed. 20+ GPM flowing into pond. Nice to see the water rising, albeit slowly. Maybe some rain this coming Tuesday. Got my fingers crossed.

Well also supplying grass irrigation system.
