Has anyone been successful getting rid of Bladderwort weeds? If so, what steps did you take? I am very worried about putting chemical in my pond due to fish kills I have heard about. I usually just rake what I can out, but this is really getting old.

Fish kills only result from the chemicals being applied incorrectly, or the completely wrong chemicals being used in the first place. I feel that doing things the natural was is usually the best way, there is a time and place where nukeing them to death is better.

Your options are grass carp or chemical applications. Grass carp will do well on bladderwort. 10-20 per acre, stock a larger carp (12") if you have adult bass. If you don't have flowing water e.g. inflow and constant outflow, a good option is flouridone (Sonar or White Cap brand names). You will need a static volume for at least 30-45 days for this to be effective. Read labels thoroughly and note limitations on irrigation if pond is used for irrigation purposes. If you have frequent or constant inflow/outflow, you're limited to contact herbicides, and you will probably be frustrated with the results.

Thanks guys for all the replies! I will take your advice and treat the pond. I put (3) 12" grass carp in there last fall, but I don't see where they have helped. Also, the bass might have eaten them.

To add to Wade's sound advice, I'm also planning to try Valent's new CLIPPER herbicide on bladderwort - when the opportunity presents itself. I've heard (?) that it works on bladderwort, but haven't yet confirmed the assertion. If it works, CLIPPER might be the best option in ponds that aren't ideally suited for fluridone's use, or are used as a source for irrigation.
