I seen this fellow in my yard today and I'm curious what of snake he is..... Any help? Interesting markings on his head.

My money is on a Corn Snake. Native and harmless to us 2 legged critters.

That's a fox snake. Harmless, but like to imitate rattlesnakes when threatened.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

That's a fox snake. Harmless, but like to imitate rattlesnakes when threatened. Thanks! We found it in the yard and got it to coil up. As I walked around the snake it would turn its head and follow me. Interesting markings on top of the head. In the end we let it go and and allow th circle of life to continue.

In the end we let it go and and allow th circle of life to continue. Bravo. And since it's either a corn or fox snake it will help control the corn and fox population in your immediate area.

In the end we let it go and and allow th circle of life to continue. Bravo. And since it's either a corn or fox snake it will help control the corn and fox population in your immediate area. I suspect the corn and foxes will be ok, the mice, rats, and rabbits may not be. Had I seen this snake in town I'd promptly taken care of it, but out here we ave plenty of space and we share a common enemy - mice! So hopefully he gets fat and sassy on them!

If you don't know them, or needed their services, Pond Boss stalwarts Todd (Todd3138) and Eric (EWEST) affect their profession by giving it a good name! As for the snake -- where is Dave D?? I'm sure he can make a positive identification. Based on what he has taught many of us over the years, here on Pond Boss, I believe that thing is the common, but dreaded Copperheaded Rattle Moccasin!

A: There are skid marks in front of the snake! There were probably skid marks in the lawyers shorts as well, so as far as skid marks are concerned, all is in equilibrium between the two. It was Ed Richter many years ago that identified the copperheaded rattle moccasin as a distinct species. To Ed, they were all deadly poisonous, could jump 10 feet, and swing from branches. Every hole in the ground had at least 3 of them.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

And, then there was the guy who ran out of minnows when fishing in his pond.
He saw a copperhead snake with a frog in its mouth. Knowing the snake couldn't bite him with the frog in its mouth, he grabbed the snake right behind the head, took the frog and put it in his bait bucket.
Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bitten - he grabbed his bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in the snake's mouth.
The snake rolled its eyes back, and then it went limp! The guy released the snake into the pond without incident and carried on with his fishing, using the frog as bait.
A little later, he felt a nudge on his foot.
There was that damn snake with two frogs in his mouth!

HA That's a good one!!! So are we in agreement it is a Western Fox Snake? Did Dave confirm this?

I can't confirm it. The only snakes I now have are copperheads and buzztails. At one time I was loaded with king snakes. Finding one about head high in a tree was a real character builder.
