Crappie spawn only once per year and don't really do that reliably. Thus they don't provide the forage that multi spawning Bluegill do. Adult Bluegill have a mouth the size of a pencil eraser and can't provide competition. Crappie spawn earlier than bass and are there in time to prey on BG and LMB fry.

How do crappie take over a pond? I've never understood that. Everything eats fry, no matter what species.
