Why is it that every good bass pond needs BG but the addition of crappie works against the growth of bass? Other than the size of the mouth what are the other differences? Crappie seem to spawn easily in ponds and dont get that much bigger, so why are they not forage fish for large bass?

Crappie spawn only once per year and don't really do that reliably. Thus they don't provide the forage that multi spawning Bluegill do. Adult Bluegill have a mouth the size of a pencil eraser and can't provide competition. Crappie spawn earlier than bass and are there in time to prey on BG and LMB fry.

How do crappie take over a pond? I've never understood that. Everything eats fry, no matter what species.

It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

John Wayne :

See you other post (like this one) for answers. It gets really confusing with the same type question in 2 or 3 places.

Sorry, I thought I lost the other one when the old lady picked up the phone. So I did it again under a new topic.

No problem and btw welcome to the PB forum. Good question and the link above (to your other thread) has lots of thoughts and answers via the links in it. The reason I made the suggestion is it is easy to lose track of a thread and it is hard sometimes to find it again , then you find one and think it is the right one but it is not. Anyway welcome aboard ! \:\)

I won't be here much longer, I don't have enternet at home. Iam in OK saying good bye to my dad, he is losing a fight with cancer and john wayne is his hero. I am a happy PB subscriber and will now only be able to check out the forum once a week, maybe someday I will get to the 21st century and do this more often....But then when would I have time to fish?

I am sorry to hear about your Dad. JW is a hero to lots of us; my son is named "Jacob" after the Duke's title character in "Big Jake."

We will see you whenever you can make it here, Take care.

Sorry to hear about your Dad, JW. I'm sure in his own way your Dad is as big a hero as John Wayne was.

Sorry about your Dad. Cancer is mean stuff. My Mother went that way about 2 years ago.
