So, I am nearing the end of my teaching career (under 10 years). Based on state funding, it could come much quicker than that! All of this has got me thinking about my next steps.

One thing my daughter (dreaming of becoming a vet) and I have talked about is going into aquaculture. At the current time, my math, psychology and education degrees don't really help me much. I am wondering if there is a program that I could start that could be done remotely. I didn't find any programs around here (Ann Arbor), and I can't really travel with raising the family (and my pond children), teaching and coaching.

Any thoughts?

Are you interested in just classes or a complete degree?

I know SDS has done some remote classes (Dr. Willis can chime in), and I'm pretty sure Auburn University does some remote classes etc.

SDSU has them headed by out first PB student scholar Melissa Wuellner now PhD.

Brian look at Kentucky State University they have online courses in aquaculture, fish reproduction, fish disease, and genetics. The courses are fairly affordable. I took these online courses during my masters work at Texas A&M. Send me a PM if you want more information.

Needs to be a fair amount of Engineering in the works to get beyond, yeah, fish live in water! As far as Aquaculture is concerned.

There's also workshops you can take at Harbor Branch in Florida on RAS technology, and Cornell occasionally has short hands on courses.

The reproduction class I took covered everything from tilapia, to channel catfish, and even freshwater prawns. From what I remember about their website you can see each class, when it is going to be offered again, what it covers, and the cost.

Yes Cecil great link to the classes but there is a link on the aquaculture departments website for the schedule of courses usually 3 semesters into the future. I have taken Dr. Gomelsky and Dr. Durborow courses still have the notes, and for the Disease course I have every lecture on my laptop. I even purchased his new disease book last year. These are top notch courses.

I love this forum. I am looking at learning general care and possibly getting a degree. I will check out the Kentucky stuff today. Just having my pond these last two years, and listening to all of you, has taught me just how much I don't know! My interest in learning gear is getting kicked into high gear.

Laugh all you want AP. Some of us find fish pathology very fascinating. If I could do it all over again I'd be a fish pathologist. Some day I hope to have a lab set up in my shop.

Yes, Kentucky State probably the best shot for aquaculture, nutrition, and diseases. For general courses to fill in the rest of a fisheries degree, the most complete program is Oregon State Univ.
