Around here it's called grabbling. I honestly don't know if it's legal.
Grabbling snapping turtles is popular here. I helped my brother clean 40+ snappers one friday night that were taken by grabbling! Had turtle stew, soup, & fried turtle at a wild game cookout the next eve.
Turtles are awfully good to eat!
