Thought I'd post a pic of what I did yesterday on an afternoon off. This water is coming from a creek about 300 ft away and 70ft down a steep hill. I did just have a pipe sticking out of the ground but thought I would utilize an old hand pump I had in the shed and some rocks and sand from the creek itself.

thanks...i figure at the least it should keep any visitors guessing why is there a well pump running constantly out by that pond ...im hoping to get an actual well in this summer down in the bottoms close to the creek.the creek doesn't like to give her water up easily. it normally runs about six inches deep with spring water but when it rains it can get about 8 feet deep quick.i bought one of those diy deep rock well drillers at an auction so i thought i might give it a try...there's no way for a well rig to get down there

I did the same thing a few years ago. If I may ask, what accessories did you get with it and what did you have to give for it? I had these big plans to use it, and when the time came for a new well I didn't have the time to do it myself. I don't want to let it go quite yet, I'm thinking of putting a well back by the pond just for the pond and possibly for irrigation.

well a friend at work was going to an estate auction and told me one was going to be there so i told him just for the hell of it to bid 200 for me. well he ended up bringing it to work that next monday believe it or not. it came with a pump,about 40 ft of drill pipe and a few bits. it was missing the base so that cost me another 75 from deep rock. its the smaller model has a 3hp 2 stoke engine but its like new, the old guy only used it once they said.last year i found this website

that used pvc pipe and a garden hose to drill wells so i stepped it up and used 4 inch pipe and a 2 inch trash pump after set up it only took me an hour to get down 22 ft til i hit rock and i filled it back in...im hoping the deep rock will do a better job plus where im going to dig is mostly sandy soil ...i also have been using these pvc screens from this website

to put in the creek then putting a submersible well pump inside the screen but not sure after going through the trouble of drilling a well i would use pvc instead of the 500 dollar stainless steel screens.....any advice you have or run across let me know and ill do the same

I paid $750 for mine, but it came with everything, including the orig. invoice. 100' of drill stem, 100' of 4" casing, 2 screens, all the bits, re-tipping compound, slurry pump,1 bag of bentonite, etc., etc.

Mine was used once as well. I talked to the owners son, it was an estate sale as well.

They have bits that are designed specifically for rock. You might need to get one of them.

you didn't do bad either screens and casing are not cheap!well let me know if you decide to give it a shot...id be curious to hear some tips from experience with one of these..thanks

So how does the water get to the hand pump? Electric pump in a creek? Just curious

yeah i have a pvc well screen in the creek with a submersible well pump in it...best solution i have found so far...the website i posted above will ship well screens pretty cheap. if they cut the 10 foot sections in to two five foot pieces ups will take them

Great info jason, let us know how the well drilling works, I also pump water from a stream in the winter but it would be much better if I could drill a small well near the pond and supply it with the warmer ground water.

Jason, thanks for posting the links above.I spent all day reading on how to drill my own well. You say your pumping from 300' away and up hill. You must have electric available? I'm looking into solar since electric is not an option to pump from the well I now intend on drilling.

glad some of you found this informative....i know i have gotten plenty of info from this site myself over the past couple years...steve the only thing i would suggest even though my hole wasnt a success, is i would consider using a pump and recirculate the water rather than a garden hose like on the website..two reasons

1. more pressure
2. when and if you hit gravel the water alone might not be thick enough to bring the gravel to the top

if you dig a hole next to the well hole you are drilling and a small trench so that the water goes down the well, back up with the cuttings, in to the trench,and back into the sump hole you dug to be pumped again...you can even add drillers mud (bentonite) to the mix if you want to thicken it up
