Well maybe not a miracle, but the pond is full again. The real miracle will be if it stays full this summer


As you can see we still have lots of snow. It was in the 60's yesterday, but it snowed again this morning. Restocking after the ice goes out. Maybe I'll put some brookies in along with the rainbows this year.

Break up some ice and cast a fly out there and see what bites.

The ice is still pretty thick. I'll find out tomorrow exactly how thick. I'm going to open and area around the over flow pipe. If you look hard, the over flow is at about 10 o'clock in the photo. I'm afraid it may lift the pipe out of the dam if water level gets any higher.

I'm also interested in seeing if any fish made it through the pond freezing soild this winter. This time last year I had open water and two rainbows and the PS's winter over.

Be careful if you get out on that ice !!!

Is that a berm around your pond which prevents watershed water from coming in? If so that would not help your low water problems.

Half of the pond has what you might call a berm. We partly filled a natural slope leading into the hole. When we dug the pond, we needed a place for the dirt and rocks. What you don't see in the picture above is it tapers down on the right. Out of view in that photo, the water actually drains off the back land into a swale that carries it into the pond. This photo was taken last spring. I'm standing where the water enters through a French drain and natural run off. As you can see it fills up, it just won't hold water through the dry months.



Low water is a breach in the bed rock. When the excavator broke open the ledge and water flowed in. I tried to seal it but haven't had any success.

I opened the ice around the out let and cleared the pipe at the exit. It was blocked by twigs and leaves from the winter. Now it is flowing out. The water is crystal clear with about a foot of slushy ice around the edge and big chunks of soild blocks pushed up in the middle of the pond.

I will cast a fly when ice is out, but not until I stock again.

Scruffy have you planned anything new to deal with the leak?

Nothing planned at the moment. I don't have the extra money right now.

Got a neighbor with and excavator move down the rocks to fill in the slope last fall, for short money. I'll just have to let nature takes it's course. I'll hope for a wet season and enjoy the pond for the next three months.
