im thinking of building a 4 acre lake and was wondering wouldn't all the water just drain out?

Josh, could you elaborate on what you mean by "drain out". If you hire an excavator and if your soil is alright there should be no problems.

If you have high clay content in the subsoil then it will act like a pool liner and hold your water for you. Make sure that you work with a contrator who knows how to build ponds and ask to see some of his work before hand.
