How many people out there use a well and a pump to keep there ponds topped off? I have a ideal area for a pond...but because of neighbor complications I cant use the stream directly into the pond. Im thinking about using a pump to keep the pond topped off but there's some math I would have no idea how to figure? Just trying to get a ballpark idea? My future pond will be about 45' x 300' x 6 feet deep. I live in Washington state. So the summer does get hot for a couple months. Evaporation rates etc. Anyone use this setup so I can compare...then ballpark my setup?

I'll take a stab at this one.

Let's say your pump pulls 10a@220v. That's 2200w.

2200w*720hr in a month=1584000 watt/hours, or 1584kwh per month.

I think electricity runs anywhere from .07 to .10 per KWH, so we'll take the .10. So that should put you at ballpark $158 a month to run your pump.

Adjust for your actual pump amps and electricity cost per kw, of course! If either number is substantially lower than the hypothetical numbers I used, your monthly cost could be much lower.

That estimate is running all the time though right? My 100 foot round pond was cut off from water this last august. It only lost about 2 inches for the whole 3 weeks it was cut off.

face72,

I wouldn't worry about 2". It sounds like your evaporation/seepage is no where close to the amount of rain you are getting. Just sit back and let good old Mother Nature fill her up.

BTW--Where in WA? I am in Bellingham.

I spend about a $100.00 per month pumping about 42 gpms 24/7 into my trout pond 7 months of the year. Well is rated for 45 gpms and is I believe 2 1/2 hp. Depth of well is about 80 feet and the well is a submersible suspended about halfway. Seems to me unless you are in experiencing a drought -- you shouldn't have to run a well to top it off -- if you have the right size watershed runoff around your pond.

If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
