Hey guys, so since most of you folks on this forum have a keen interest in ponds, or at least fish, I though i would ask you guys if you have any experiance in aquaponics. For those of you who don't know what aquaponics are here is a quick summary:
It is a combination of aquaculture, and hydroponics (plants grown only with water)So in this case though the plants are fed by water to, but the nutrients come from the fish instead of chemical fertilizers. So it really is a closed loop system which allows the 'fish water' to be pumped to the grow beds where the plants use the nutrients and filter the water which promplty returns back into the fish tank.
I was thinking of starting up a small system sometime soon and am hoping some of you guys would offer some experience. I am located in Ontario Canada.
I'm getting the fish part down RAS, but haven't as yet advanced to growing plants with the water that is rich in nitrates and other nutrients. This spring I will be pumping the waste water to my raised garden. But I do plan on growing my own vegetables hydroponically eventually.
Here's a good Aquaponics website to go to. Based in Australia but many folks from Canada and the states on it. The site administrator has written a very good book on the subject too. Be good though as I'm a moderator there.
