Hey guys, so since most of you folks on this forum have a keen interest in ponds, or at least fish, I though i would ask you guys if you have any experiance in aquaponics. For those of you who don't know what aquaponics are here is a quick summary:
It is a combination of aquaculture, and hydroponics (plants grown only with water)So in this case though the plants are fed by water to, but the nutrients come from the fish instead of chemical fertilizers. So it really is a closed loop system which allows the 'fish water' to be pumped to the grow beds where the plants use the nutrients and filter the water which promplty returns back into the fish tank.
I was thinking of starting up a small system sometime soon and am hoping some of you guys would offer some experience. I am located in Ontario Canada.

We have had several topics on it. Mark Cornwell gave a talk on aquaponics at the PB Convention. They have been running a system at SUNY-Cobleskill (he is a prof of fisheries in upstate NY- contact him for help) cornwemd@cobleskill.edu

I have a small one running in my backyard (made the filter out of a 5 gallon bucket, got a 210 gallon per minute pond pump, and put those into a 70 gallon stock tank. Growing some Bell Peppers in gravel).
My only suggestion is to use something lightweight for the substrate / bedding material. It is really a pain, (Literally) to move things around if you are using gravel. It is really heavy...

I'm getting the fish part down RAS, but haven't as yet advanced to growing plants with the water that is rich in nitrates and other nutrients. This spring I will be pumping the waste water to my raised garden. But I do plan on growing my own vegetables hydroponically eventually. Here's a good Aquaponics website to go to. Based in Australia but many folks from Canada and the states on it. The site administrator has written a very good book on the subject too. If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I didn't know you were a moderator over there, Cecil. It has been awhile since I've been on the site, though. I have the book that you mentioned and it has a lot of good information for the beginner. I haven't had a chance to implement it, yet, though. I'm hoping to set something up this summer.

I didn't know you were a moderator over there, Cecil. It has been awhile since I've been on the site, though. I have the book that you mentioned and it has a lot of good information for the beginner. I haven't had a chance to implement it, yet, though. I'm hoping to set something up this summer. I can relate Chris. I think it took me 2 years before I finally set up my first RAS.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.

I must have gotten my sites mixed up. I just went and took a look at my book, and it is the backyard aquaponics book, not Gary's urban aquaponics book. I think I will purchase Gary's book, before I start, though. It looks pretty good.

When I was involved in aquaponics sites, I much preferred the aquaponicshq site as it is more like this forum....well moderated and friendly...and by far the most informative and open-minded. Members there look for new, creative and effective ways to reach goals.
I found the backyard site to be very close-minded and far less thoughtful when it comes to ways goals can be reached...a lot of myth and faulty info as well as having an agenda not geared toward sharing ideas and information....just my considered opinion.
