Found THIS COOL TOOL for measuring surface areas on the tractorbynet forum. You can use topos or aerial views and outline the area your interested in online. The program does the calcs. Useful for planning a pond or measuring an existing one.

Thanks for posting that. I messed with it for awhile this morning. It seems to work pretty well for larger areas but doesn't seem to do that well on smaller ones. I have 2 approx. one acre ponds. I've walked, plotted, and measured them several times with my Rangefinder. One of them, it shows as 2.5 acres and the other at .46 acres. I think it needs one more level of imagery.
Dang, I like Google Maps. I can only imagine what the military satellite photos are like.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

That is an awesome site. The only downside is that I think my pond is shrinking, maybe down to 4.5 acres.

This can also be used to determine watershed to a pond site. I did a quick check on topo of my ponds and it was fairly consistent to what the NRCS had given me.
 The road goes on forever and the party nevers end...............................................

WHoa that is kick butt in metro Atlanta. Once you get in the country not so much. Thanks for the link I have been looking for something like this. I have to get the guys when things are slow to play wiht it to spec out acerage on about 100 lakes we manage in metro ATL. They may not be happy about the extra work.
