Example of the effects of overcrowding on bluegill
Hi all!
Was out collecting fish for class today in a local pond on the campus of Mississippi State University and found a LIVE SWIMMING SKELETON!! This pond is extrememly overcrowded with small bluegill with VERY low numbers of LMB (if any!). I know there has been articles in Pond Boss related to fish relative weight (Wr). This bluegill had a Wr of 36.8!!! Incredible it was even still alive! Notice how it it skinnier than a pencil! I must say, quite a disturbing site! Enjoy!

Thanks for the pic. That friends is what you want to avoid. Now we need to get a pic of an example of LMB crowding to go with it. Then everyone will understand balance and the meaning of this text from a prior study covered in the Cutting Edge.
Waters often reflect one of two stable states where the desired �balanced� state may represent an unstable state on the cusp between two undesirable but persistent states (stunted predator populations with low body condition or stunted prey populations with poor condition) highlighting the difficulty of maintaining balance.

This shows how much fishing in ponds really do help. Lots of my friends ask me why do I take so many bass out since I have Hybrid bluegill. I wonder what the bass looks like from that pond?
Take someone new fishing at your pond. They'll be hooked forever.

Well...I can tell you that we electrofished the entire shoreline and didnt find a single bass! However, I have talked with a few students on campus that claim they fish there occasionally for bass. I'm sure the bass that are there are Fat and Happy!
