excavated groundwater pond vs. run-off pond - be prepared for water fluctuations (i.e. depth) from wet season to dry season. Make sure banks are at a slope that you can walk down to the water easily when water is high AND low.

If you want a pier or dock, it'll probably have to be a floating one.
