This is absolutely the best time of the year to start at Front Royal or Luray, and head south into North Carolina. After the kids were gone, and when we still had our motor home, we would take several days to make the trip. My most favorite places were "Peaks of Otter" and "Hungry Mother." In either place, it seemed that no matter what camping spot we had, we still needed 2-3 feet of elevation on at least one set of wheels to get us anywhere near level.
But, there is nothing like a fresh butterflied trout breakfast with eggs and home fries, enjoyed against a backdrop of beautiful lakes and mountains of incredible color.
We sure are fortunate to live in such a beautiful and bountiful area!
