Working on the back side of the dam has it's dangers. If it were to give way, the operator would be in harms way rather quickly if there still was substantial water in the pond.
That's why I would prefer the option of draining the pond first.
If pigs could fly bacon would be harder to come by and there would be a lot of damaged trees.
