I just finished reading about eliminating bullhead from ponds. I was wondering if the same techniques would work for FHCs? (Flat head Catfish)
At what water temperature do FHC spawn? The same as LMB?
They used garbage cans with 6" holes during the spawn to remove the fish and eggs. Would a FHC hold up in one during the year just because it is a secure place to hide when they are not hunting for food? Do you think it might also work for Bowfin?
It seems like a new idea that is worth a try. I have had lines out all summer & had some success removing FHC & Bowfin. Now that the water has cooled so has my good luck removing them.

Simply for the low cost of a plastic trash can & lid, it's worth a try.
Bullheads only get to a certain size, I believe; maybe 15" long on average, so a 6" hole accomodates them.
A flat head cat can get very big, I believe, so I'm not sure how bid a hole you'd have to make.

FHC spawn in water temps warmer than LMB. Data suggest in June and July in places where LMB are spawning in April and May. Still checking but I think when water temps are around 75 degrees.

On a side note, I think the bullheads use the garbage can as a place to hang out as opposed to a place to spawn.
I wonder if you could bait the garbage can with a chicken or something.

Cut BG or GShad are great for FHC.

Trolling large crankbaits works well too, a Rapala DT10 is one of my favorites for FHC. Here is a picture from a public lake near Lincoln from June. The DT10 got five of these bad boys that day.
