As part of the "Master Plan" I am considering using part of our property to raise livestock, specifically goats. Depending on what we have to do for Ag classification/ exemption they may have access to the pond (which is also still in planning phase)
I know that cattle can really mess up a pond, but not sure what goats are capable of. The pond will be lined, and then topped with a foot of dirt which should protect the liner. I will put a thicker layer of dirt over the areas that the goats may prefer.
Any experience or opinions?

Goats and liners? Just sounds like a bad idea.. But I don't really see what how they could do damage.. I'm not an expert either..

Goats are the best pond maintenace tool ever invented! No tractor mowing - no weed eaters - love water primrose!

George, hard to tell the size/breed of goat. Is that a specific breed you have?

Not sure what livestock can do to a liner but I'm concerned about it.
It's not about the fish. It's about the pond. Take care of the pond and the fish will be fine. PB subscriber since before it was in color.

George, hard to tell the size/breed of goat. Is that a specific breed you have? Ponds and goats belong to my son - I am only the "share cropper" pondmeister - don't know much about goats except they keep the pond banks fishable ....  Originally the goats were South African Boer meat goats but sensitive to hoof and disease problems - son Jeff introduced disease resitant Spanish genetics to prsent herd. You'll need at least one of these Great Pyranese livestock guard dogs if you have coyote or bobcat critters ... they will also control otter problems ...

I was gonna guess boer, but they didn't look big enough. We will also be raising meat goats, and the staight boer around here while introduced as super hardy and resistant also tend to have issues. The cross seems to be the answer. Thanks for all the help George

Beautiful dogs George. I have a big 140 pound Great Pyrenees puppy right now that I rescued. My girlfriend and I have fallen in love with the breed. My son wrestles with him like a big stuffed animal. I am hoping he is about done growing. We shall see.
